IDECO's Compassionate Response: Addressing Challenges Faced by IDPs from Anglophone Crisis in Douala - Bonaberi
The Anglophone crisis has left a permanent mark on the civilian population of Cameroons Northwest and Southwest regions and worst affected are the children. A guerrilla war fought with kidnappings and murders, the conflict has played out in a manner that has left thousands of children without parents and communities upturned since it erupted in 2016. This has had a devastating impact on children, with nearly 700,000 not able to go to school because of the violence. Schools have been attacked, making them places of closure and taking away the right to education for children. This ongoing violence has caused the death of parents leaving a high number of orphans. SOS Children Villages and other organizations have been trying to help these vulnerable children, both in terms of care and care advocacy.
THIS war has descended into guerrilla warfare, with rebels and army both resorting to ever more brutal tactics. Many civilians fall prey to this violence with threats of abduction and violence. Both sides have been accused of atrocities, from raiding occupied villages to torture and war crimes, in a conflict that has killed at least 6,000 and displaced more than 1million.
As the crisis has deepened, IDECO has offered assistance to more than 1,228 families who have fled the conflict and leaving in Douala- Bonaberi. This support comprises the supply of staples such as rice, beans, maize, cooking oil and canned fish to ease hunger and maintain nutrition. In addition to what IDECO has provided, other non-food items such as blankets, plastic sheeting, cooking set, jerry cans, buckets, sleeping mats, and sanitary items in order to improve living conditions and maintain hygiene among displaced populations.
Humanitarian needs resulting from the Anglophone crisis are huge and persistent. Despite the crucial relief that IDECO has provided, permanent support is needed as we shall continue to help those impacted. We also encourage our donor, partners, and well-wishers to provide more support for IDECO to make sure that more lives will benefit from this project.
In solidarity, we can affect significant and long-lasting changes on behalf of all the displaced families in Douala as well as other localities in and around Cameroon. You will be the light in darkness, the hope in hopelessness, and ease for those in distress through your contributions well above the rest.
