DECO is organizing a comprehensive Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Needs Assessment Project across nine schools in Kumasi, ashanti region with objectives to

  • Address the insufficiency of sanitation facilities by installing toilets with running water for students.

  • Enhance menstrual hygiene management for girls by establishing changing rooms during menstruation.

  • Support girls in managing their periods with dignity through the provision of sanitary pads an

  • Implement effective waste management measures, with a particular focus on the proper disposal of sanitary pads within schools.

The absence of running water and the presence of degraded, outdated toilet systems pose significant challenges for students, particularly girls. Inadequate sanitation facilities lead to hygiene-related issues, heightened infection risks, and discomfort, especially during menstruation. The lack of changing rooms and insufficient menstrual hygiene management exacerbate these challenges, affecting girls' attendance, classroom focus, and overall well-being.
